Lauded as the epitome of exemplary acting skills, Priyanka Chopra has always made headlines, be it for her numerous hits in B-Town or her journey in Hollywood with Quantico and Baywatch. She is undoubtedly a fine actor, but when it comes to hypocrisy she is no different from her Bollywood counterparts. Just when we think they have hit the rock bottom in their inanity displayed in public, they find shovels and start digging new depths to showcase their ignorance.
A couple of months back when PM Modi was in Berlin, Priyanka Chopra who was coincidentally there expressed her desire to meet the PM and a formal meeting was set up. Although PM Modi showed up in a black formal Bandh Gala suit, Priyanka Chopra decided to show up in a casual white knee length floral dress.
A War soon erupted on social media. There were people who made comments about her for not being appropriately dressed for meeting the PM, and there were liberals and self-proclaimed feminists who painted the social media with rants like “You go girl”,” You are an independent lady” etc. To up the ante a bit, Priyanka Chopra posted a lovely mother-daughter bonding photo, both sporting short skirts in a party. The caption of the picture read- “Legs for days…. #itsthegenes with @madhuchopra nights out in #Berlin #beingbaywatch.”
This incident made her the darling of the feminists and she suddenly became a champion of women’s rights. Comments like “Girls are free to wear whatever they want to wear”, “When would we grow up beyond the dress of a woman to focus on the mettle she carries in her head?”, “When her mother doesn’t object to Priyanka Chopra showing her legs, who are you to make judgments?”, “PC is making India proud globally! Look at yourself, no one knows you! And your opinion doesn’t matter” etc. made many feminists feel happy and good about their petty existences.
What people forgot to note here is that it was never about Priyanka Chopra’s dress but the etiquette. When you are meeting the Prime Minister of the Country in a formal setting, you can’t turn up in casual dress. Had Akshay Kumar turned up in say Shorts and Gym Tees to meet the PM, he would have been trolled equally bad.
Fast forward two months, Priyanka Chopra was spotted in an all different attire when she went to meet the Syrian refugee families in Jordan, covering every possible inch of her body with a cloth and further she quoted “We should respect their culture”.
Wait! What?
What happened to Priyanka’s previous statement “I wear what I want”? or “My Dress My choice”, it’s amazing the moment liberals enters a sharia zone, sharia becomes a choice… and the choice ceases to exist the moment she steps out. She chose to accept the regressive custom of a covering every inch of her body, which ironically is not even mentioned in the Quran. It simply is a diktat of the Mullahs.
The entire feminist brigade who constantly urge women to stand up to patriarchal rules and take a stand for themselves and womanhood at large suddenly went silent. They chose to accept the idea that “Hijab is a choice and not a compulsion.” Ridiculous.
Many actresses such as Priyanka Chopra push for diversity and say the girls next door have changed. On one hand, they are a feminist ranting about their oppression but on the other they merrily and willingly get oppressed. While empowered women like Priyanka should be striking a blow against the most dehumanizing misogyny inflicted on women, they instead don “pussy hats” and march against people who ask them to dress up appropriately for formal occasions. It’s a common trait, seen before as well.
While women must have the right to wear whatever they want, far too many well-intentioned feminists don’t seem to realize that if Priyanka Chopra says she chooses to wear the hijab, it does not negate the fact that the vast majority of women around the world are forced to wear to veil themselves.
Real feminism (If it exists) must honor women as creative and nourishing force, including respecting women who choose to fully embrace womanhood through motherhood. It recognizes the feminine as part of a greater duality that makes equal space for the masculine, and in that it honors men.
Celebrities (at least most of them) have time and again displayed that they are full of hypocrisy. There isn’t a pint of concern or respect for anything, be it our PM or any social cause. Their only motto is to fake social presence and gain followers. And frankly speaking this act of Priyanka Chopra is so duplicitous that it is puke-inducing.
