Delhi’s AAP government is once again at the centre of criticism, this time for it’s failure on several administrative fronts.
A dead rat was found in the mid-day meal served in a Delhi government school on Thursday, 16th February.
The meal was served at Government Boys’ Senior Secondary School in Deoli area, and students were rushed to Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital. A teacher of the school on condition of anonymity was quoted “The food was being served to the students when someone found the dead rat. The situation in the government run schools is very bad despite the tall claims made by this government”. Thankfully, all the nine children are in stable condition and will be discharged soon.
With Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal in Bengaluru due to health problems, the onus was well and truly on Deputy CM Manish Sisodia to take stock of the situation.
The same Manish Sisodia who on taxpayer’s money went to Finland of all countries, according to him “to study Finland’s fantastic education system and implement in Delhi” at time when Delhi was in the middle of a chikungunya and dengue outbreak and no senior leader of AAP was present in Delhi. The trip was more of an extravaganza than an educational trip. Even if we are to believe that the trip was indeed in the best interests of the people of Delhi, this incident of a dead rat being found in mid-day meal exposes AAP and it’s hollow promises. Incidents of questionable quality of mid-day meal served are not new in India but AAP and Kejriwal were supposed to be “the harbinger of justice and clean politics.” Does Manish Sisodia also needs to travel to Finland to learn how not to serve poisonous food to students?
The interesting thing to note is that the director of the NGO which cooked and supplied to the school is the father-in-law of an AAP MLA. Kunwar Pal Singh, director of Jan Chetna Jagriti & Shaikshanik Vikas, is the father-in-law of AAP’s Ambedkar Nagar MLA Ajay Dutt. Kunwar Pal Singh has been named in the FIR whereas Ajay Dutt chose not to respond to media. The BJP alleged that Sisodia tried to suppress the issue while questioning AAP why the children were taken to a government hospital 8KM away instead of Batra hospital which was less than a kilometre away. It’s absolutely sickening to know that AAP in their battle against PM Modi completely ignored Delhi and it’s people and decided to play the blame game. More often than not, one can hear Sisodia on local radio channels bragging about the work their government has done for the government run schools. The work was clearly visible on Thursday and exposed the rampant corruption that exists in the holier than thou Delhi government.
All this comes at a time when the Delhi Government was already under the scanner from Delhi HC for the death of 11 inmates in a rehab home for the mentally challenged. Several deaths at a rehabilitation house for mentally challenged people don’t seem to bother the AAP govt caught up in advertising two years of its self-proclaimed good governance. Amidst all this, the Delhi Government still has the audacity to seek a 4 fold salary increase for it’s MLA’s for their “stellar work”. The overall monthly package of MLAs is proposed to be increased from current Rs 88,000 to Rs 2.10 lakh making Delhi legislators the highest paid lawmakers in the country. Unsurprisingly, the Central Government rejected the proposal as the burden on the exchequer would certainly not commensurate to the revenues of the Delhi government.
This incident has all but proved that the claims of AAP’s development in the education sector are nothing but a farce. The AAP which rode to power from the support of the most poorest of the sections of the society has led it’s supporters down on more than one occasion. The affected students were aged between 5-12 and belonged to the lowest rung of the society. The lapses in the AAP led Delhi government administration was for all to see and the culprits of this incident must be brought to justice. Recently in Bihar, 4 children died after consuming contaminated mid-day meal. This a worrying trend in India where incidents of poor quality of mid-day meals are popping up regularly. One possible solution is that the teachers and government officials also have the same food to satisfy the quality of food served to the students. Arvind Kejriwal is expected to be back in Delhi on 22nd February and don’t be surprised if he blames this incident on PM Modi too.
