As expected, the largest religious majority of India hasn’t taken the “meddling” in their “religious” affairs lightly. Modi Government’s proposal to implement the One Nation One Law (Technically the Uniform Civil Code) has found strong resistance from the Muslim community.
In their press briefing, the AIMPLB stated “Uniform Civil Code is not good for this nation. There are so many cultures in this nation, and have to be respected. We live in this country in accordance with the Constitution, which grants us freedom to live and practice our religion”.
The AIMPLB gave example of the American society where everyone follows their personal laws and identity. They were surprised as India doesn’t want to follow America’s steps in this matter.
The AIMPLB further added that Muslims equally participated in India’s freedom struggle, but their participation is always underestimated. The board launched a scathing attack on Modi Government by accusing them of applying diversionary tactics.
However the Muslim women activists protesting against the archaic triple talaq and polygamy practices hailed Modi Government for the bold step. They said that practices such as Triple Talaq, Nikah Halala and polygamy are violative of womens’ equality and dignity and therefore need to be abolished.
“Triple Talaq takes place in gross violation of Quranic injunctions and values of justice and equality enshrined in the Indian constitution. We also welcome the stand that the fact that these practices are legally regulated in several Muslim countries indicates these are not essential practices in the Islamic religion”, they further added.
Before judging anyone or anything, the first thing that the citizens of this country need to do is congratulate the Modi Government for raising an issue as important as One Nation One Law. This is one area that has been deliberately been disregarded by all previous governments as it has the potential to topple governments. Shah Bano case is one very obvious example of how even a full majority government crumbles under the pressure of Muslim clerics.
The AIMPLB must remember that India practices equality and essence of equality lies in equal treatment of citizens. Unless Muslims keep getting administered by a different set of laws than other communities, equality will remain a distant dream.
Also Muslim community is the first one to advocate the need of equality. When a landlord turns his back on a Muslim tenant, all of us share a collective grief because it is against the basic tenets of equality. But when the same Muslim community vilifies the government for trying to implement one nation one law, it simply reeks of hypocrisy and opportunism.
Of course we cannot conclude this article without mentioning the cabal of intellectuals and liberals of India who cry intolerance at the drop of a hat. The Dadri Lynching episode led to a series of nationwide protests, the central theme of which was that the government doesn’t practice equality and the nation is getting increasingly intolerant.
Their stoic silence reeks of hypocrisy as well. The cabal’s single dimensional agenda to vilify Hindus and create a rift between Hindus and Muslims by routine demonization of Hindus, is getting exposed far too often now.
It’s time that the award returning cartel comes out in the open and confesses that they do not support one nation one law and that they are against the freedom of Muslim Women.
The Modi Government has a long fight ahead and it has the support from the majority of the nation. If there’s one government that can fix the loopholes in the partial legal system of India, it is this government. We don’t want more Shah Banos. Muslim Women are as Indian as Muslim Men or Hindus for that matter.
