arnab goswami

Journalism in India has its own heroes and heroines to boast of. From Salma Sultan of the yesteryears, to Rajat Sharma of Aap Ki Adalat fame, every journalist has his / her own tale. For every irritating scribe like Barkha Dutt or Rajdeep Sardesai, we also have stalwarts like Tavleen Singh, Sudhir Ranjan Choudhury and the list goes on, and then, there’s Arnab Goswami.

You know him as the loudmouth journalist from the epic News Hour debate on the English news channel TIMES NOW. You know him for his epic quotes, such as ‘Nation wants to Know’, ‘India wants an answer’ you might nickname him as ‘Sunny Deol’ of Indian journalism as well. But that’s Arnab Goswami for you. These days, when a big section of the mainstream media is hand in gloves with the pseudo secular forces (that includes terrorists as well), hell bent on destroying the Indian democracy, there are few journalists who are working hard to save Indian journalism, and keep the Fourth Estate alive. Arnab Goswami, is one of these journalists. You might hate his high pitched voice, but you can’t hate his intentions, if you’re an INDIAN.

Recently, in one of his epic Newshour Debates, Arnab blasted through the hazy accusations of terrorist turned separatist leader, Yasin Malik, during a debate on whether Batla House encounter was legal or not, given that one of the accused, Bada Sajid, had now joined the ISIS.

Arnab Goswami ripped apart the sham of accusations posed by Yasin Malik, and Asad Ashraf, who was questioning the stance of the Delhi Police in context with the encounter.

Not only did Arnab nickname Yasin a ‘terrorist’, and reminded him that this was Arnab’s show, not Yasin Malik’s alleged ‘uncle’, Hafiz Saeed’s home, but he also accused Asad Ashraf of providing cover to such people, accusing him of being sympathizer to the cause of terrorism. This plain-speaking created a furore in the Mainstream Media. Now if you call a thief a thief, he/she is not going to rejoice, right?

This maverick journalist needs no introduction. But for beginners, he comes from an illustrious family. Born on 9th October 1973, Tuesday, in Guwahati, Assam, his grandfather, Shri Rajani Kanta Goswami, was a true blue Congressman, and an independence activist. His maternal grandfather, Gauri Shankar Bhattacharya, was a left winged Marxist, and a leader of opposition in Assam for years. The genes Arnab inherited are probably from his father, Colonel (retd.) Manoranjan Goswami.

Arnab, though privileged, understands his roots well. He is a proud alumnus of Hindu College, Delhi University, and also studied in St. Antony’s College, where he completed his Masters in Social Anthropology. He joined the Telegraph in Calcutta, where he worked for less than a year, before he joined the NDTV in 1995. His show, ‘News Tonight’, was a rage in the late 90s, and ran for five straight years, until disillusioned with the allegedly sinister stance of NDTV, he left the agency in 2006, joining TIMES NOW as its news anchor and editor in chief. He is allegedly criticized for his pro democratic stance, where in the Newshour Debate, he plays the judge, and the audience the jury. Is it wrong, to echo the sentiments of the Indians?

Earlier known for his irritating rants, which included the controversial support to the AAP student leader, Jasleen Kaur, who filed a malicious case against a commuter, Sarabjeet, for molestation, where there was none, Arnab started making sense from the JNU issue onwards, where he blasted the students, including the alleged intellectual terrorist, Umar Khalid for shouting anti India slogans.

His words echoed an Indian’s sentiment over the same, ‘You people carry an Indian passport? You are on an Indian campus, you are the beneficiaries of a subsidized Indian government education, your education is paid for by the Indian taxpayers, and you misuse your freedom of expression, and call it cultural? You ……. (referring to Umar and his alleged gang of intellectual terrorists), are more dangerous to us than the Maoist terrorists…….’that, in a few lines, explained what the dissenting students of JNU actually were.

Arnab didn’t stop there. He lambasted the atrocious and glorifying coverage of the intellectual terrorists by other media powerhouses, and hailed the unfortunate martyrs, Captain Pawan Kumar (who died fighting against the terrorists in Pampore) and Lance Naik Hanumanthappa (who was rescued alive after the avalanche at the Siachen glacier) for their valor and bravery. While others tried to glorify the intellectual terrorists, Arnab Goswami was one of the few journalists who proudly supported the true victims and martyrs, lambasting Lenin Kumar, one of the active protesters at JNU, for keeping mum on the Kashmiri Pandits holocaust, and the alleged Pakistani atrocities. Unlike journalists such as Barkha Dutt, who are ready to imperil the lives of our brave soldiers for her fame, Arnab is someone who seriously respects the valor of our Indian armed forces. .

At a time, when most of the Indian journalists are ready to sell themselves and the nation, just to protect their alleged patrons, Arnab Goswami is probably one of the rare journalists, who is trying his best to expose such intellectual terrorists and their patrons. No doubt some might be irritated by his noise, but if someone from the journalists deserves respect, here is the man without doubt, this Arnab Goswami. Let not his struggle drown out in the noise he makes. Let us carry his brand of revolution forward.
