I have been reading about this meat ban in Mumbai and all the people losing their heads over this ban and arguing that their freedom of eating what they want is being taken away by this ban and targeting Jains over this issue. People have started trolling about the same and some people have gone to the ridiculous extent of saying that what will you feed the animals in the zoo.
So here is my take on this issue.
For starters, let me clarify that this meat ban has been in place since 1994, yes 1994, which means it’s been there since more than 20 years and it’s not a new thing. So people making a fuss about this meat ban are probably not aware of the history or they willfully chose to ignore things that happen under certain governments. Also if it is a problem now, then it should have been a problem earlier also, why was there no protest over this earlier? People need to think about this before going ballistic over this issue.
Next the people who are targeting Jain’s for imposing their religious beliefs on them clearly don’t know anything about Jainism except for the fact that Jains do not eat onion, garlic and potatoes. So based on this extremely limited knowledge about Jainism, I think it’s wrong to target anyone. So let me put some things in perspective about Jainism.
Jainism has a religion which has non-violence as its core tenant and that is why they do not eat non-veg food. But this non-violence is not only limited to physical violence; it also extends to psychological/mental violence. So if I am forcing someone to do something against their free will, or imposing my ideas on them, then that itself is a sort of violence which any practicing Jain would not do.
Further Jainism is about self-introspection and looking within yourself to try and improve your life and definitely not about forcing someone to follow your beliefs.
Also during Paryushan, Jains say “Micchami Dukadam” which means “If I have, intentionally or unintentionally, in words, deeds or thought, have hurt you any way whatsoever then I ask for your forgiveness”. They ask for forgiveness from everyone irrespective of their cast/creed/eating preference etc. So a Jain asking to intentionally take away the livelihood of some poor person by asking the meat shops remain closed even for a day is something which any person who understands Jainism would not do.
So when it comes to this ban, please note that this was done by some politician just to make his presence felt and nothing else. There has been no Jain organization or a religious head that has come forward supporting this ban because they know that doing so would be wrong as it would be akin to forcibly imposing your ideas and religious beliefs on someone else, which Jains do not believe in doing.
So please stop this mindless targeting of Jain’s and rather target the legislators who have brought about this legislation.
P.S : Also Jains form only 0.42% of the population of the country, so they are not even vote banks, neither do they ask for reservations, are one of the most educated and prosperous communities in the country and are quite self-sufficient and do not depend on the government to grant anything special to them, so if the legislators think that this would be some kind of appeasement to the Jain’s then I think they are highly mistaken.

Then why not any Jain community or organization coming forward to say anything about it publicly to lift this ban.
why do you not come forward and say anything about Ganesh pandals which block the road ?
This is now a Hindu Rashtra. Didn’t you get the memo? What? You say Jains voted for it too? Well, then your goose got cooked. How are you going to balance the karmic debt now? Ready to go to the Centrist / Socialist platform?
Today i saw ur post, so replying late. Now when u talk about ganesh festival….first of all its not related to any specific religion.Second of all i do agree that ganesh pandals create hell lot of havok and traffic jams and i am too against its construction at any blind spot and now a days all city s muncipalties are working to make it strict for ganesh mandals to follow basic rules (u will knw this only if u read paper). People do comment on this issue in papers (again u shud be reading paper for that) . But nobody has said it to follow any specific rules becoz its ganapati or any other hindu/muslim/sikh/christian festival.
When people block the roads for Ganpati its ok. When people block the roads to erect stalls of meat during Ramzan its ok. When people dirty the whole country during Holi its okay. I prefer peace, we all prefer peace. Why doesn’t Shivsena say anything when all the above stuff happens? Who gives people the right to question our nationality? Does it give me the right to question you on your religion?
None of this is OK, does that mean people have to accept another wrong thing because we have accepted (or forced to accept) 10 others before?
No, no need to accept any wrong thing or need to make it tradition but tell me one thing making slaughter houses to remain closed for a few days is wrong. As it is not a big deal if the slaughter houses remain closed for a few days in a year and this just only to save animals
Yes, it is wrong to force your religious beliefs on others. It is wrong to dictate others when to do their business and when not to eat a particular type of food. That slaughter house you talk about is livelihood of many people and it also is a source of food. If you find it cruel to kill for food, good, don’t eat it. But why force your views upon others? I think by doing this Jains are going against their very values of live and let live. Some people even talk about how meat eaters are not being sensitive or respectful to Jains by accepting this meat ban for just 4 days. You need to understand that its not about 4 days or 10 days, its about you influencing the government to arm twist other communities to abide by principles of your community.
Moral of the story. Let the Hindus litter the streets and pollute the environment on Holi, Diwali etc. Let the Muslims do loud mic azans and kill cows in the streets. But don’t let the Jains any quarter (pun intended) when it comes to a single week of fasting. Now, Smiral, you know where our little Jain community stands in the Virat Bharat scheme of things. Still voting BJP and siding with Hindutva … are we? Are we?
Firstly, you can not defend a mistake by saying that there are several others who are already doing such mistakes. You have right to file a case against all these things, it is your problem that you didn’t. Secondly in the context of this post, the meat ban came in lime light because the Jain community had appealed to observe an 8 day meat ban in Mumbai, an information which is conveniently excluded from the post. Keeping aside core values of any religion, any obstruction to freedom that comes as a part of rituals is unconstitutional.
i dont think if any of hindu god or goddess eat meat….and this is so not opposite of showing curbing freedom…roasting meat in front of community hall is a shameful act of showing protest…
Its one of the worst things done by shivsena and everybody …even marathi news channels and papers are completely against it. And this is wht i was trying to say in my first post that everybody saying that we r not forcing anybody to stop eating meat … but then why not speaking about it openly? why not speaking about lifting the ban if its only done by few political people?
And wether hindu god goddesses eat meat or not i hv no idea about it…but may be not that s why they r god…i m just a human being!
that’s what i trying to say….jain people didn’t go to each slaughter shop and shut it down forcefully. They did not themselves pass the law, they ask govt. in a legal way.If anybody got a problem with that ,they should protest legally. I do not understand that why people are against jain people. its the govt that passes the law of meat ban….
And hinduism is all about vedas, gita ,purana..etc etc….all of them condemn this flesh eating…so, all flesh eater who call them self a hindu should stop eating meat stop calling themselves hindu and this shiv sena i don’t think they are hindu believers…the only job they do is criticism…
You will file a case? Lol , its India, Here nothing happens by filing a case!!! Go and do something productive in the world.
we as a community feel its pointless to respond to accusations on us which are baseless.rather than pointing fingers at other communities’which u seem to love,we feel it harms and hampers the basic purpose of co existence. i could write a long speech on what happens during ganpati, eid etc.But i choose not to.
Dear anusha…its not about wht happens during festivals of any other religion, its about imposing rules as per my religion on others. We dont even like some body else telling us wht to wear..( how we react to it…who the hell is he/she to tell wht i shud be wearing) then how do anybody expect other to follow religious belif for eating habits (even its for 8 or 4 days…or even sake of not killing animals)
Ketaki – do you enjoy killing animals by a knife or by means? what if it happens to your child? What the hell you are talking about ban for a noble cause and talking nonsense about the same?
Jinang Kothari…
I really feel sad for your outdated knowledge…
Specially for that minority & reservation part…
Pls update urself…
N check out the draft of the regulation passed by the Indian Legislature…
In which it is clearly stated that Jain community has urged for imposing this ban…
Regards,
Former Jain
how are jains not a minority ?
Because per the Aryan Supremacy Laws of Hindu Rashtra, we are an offshoot of their magnanimous tradition of ‘Tolerance’ you see? That little inconvenient fact that Jainism is a pre-Vedic Shramana Dharmic Nastik Darshan stream, parallel to the Vedic Brahmana Dharmic Aastik Darshan, is of no relevance. Just subsume the little fellow into the One Big Dharmic Family umbrella and muffle him to sleep. So there … no more a minority. Just a has been.
Notty you are just naughty and not any sort of Former or Future Jain,
You should have given respect to our lord rather than commenting here.
Jai Jinendra and Jai Lord Mahavirah.
Question: Why Target Jains over Meat Ban?
Answer: Because they asked for it.
http://www.rediff.com/news/interview/the-man-who-inspired-the-meat-ban-in-mumbai/20150908.htm
Dear friend wake up, this is India and true Indians have always been living together and respecting each others religion, even uneducated ppl know this and they do it in better way, but some selfish sick ppl does not understand this n try to divide the country for their selfishness since e they don’t have any stunts other than targeting specific community or ppl from specific region every time keeping ye on vote bankbank, but they are not clever enough to understand previous pole results, India doesn’t want this divide and rule policy . I think you understand what I want to saysay and your eyes will open at least now…
My eyes are open and I already had long discussions about it in other platforms. India is a multi-cultural country with many religions, the last thing you want is one religious group trying to impose their beliefs on others, a ban is just that. People need to keep their faith & beliefs to themselves, that’s the way to earn respect. As for the political side of it..it’s communal politics.
You are 85% correct. Hindus have a right to impose their ways because they now have a Hindu Rashtra. The rest of you … must learn to set your speakers on mute and lip-read.
Its nice to have this perspective. Also, happy to know that no Jain religious leader has actually asked for it. Politians have their way of hogging the spotlight. Its a shame that a community is getting blamed because of a few people.
