What if?

Nilekani Aadhaar
“So students the results for “Smart Software Solutions” are out. A total of 30 students have made it to the company. Congratulations. Please check the notice board for names and other details” The placement coordinator shouted and the students immediately started rushing towards the main notice board in the academic block.“Chal Chal chal…Hey Bhagwaan is waali me ho jaaye” Kartik said nervously.

“How was the interview man?” Gaurav asked. The confidence on Kartik’s face  was a tell-tale itself but he still wished to confirm.

“Good man, I mean great. The interviewer chap was a mirthful man. He was joking all the time. He asked about 1NF, 2NF, 3NF, BCNF, Some OOPS concepts, difference between C and C++,  a question about stacks and queues and some questions about the final year project. I answered every single question. The stack and queue answer wasn’t satisfactory but still I am sure I will crack this one”. Kartik said in one single breath.

“Good good, I wish you all the best” said Gaurav almost running now, trying to match his pace with Kartik’s brisk walk.

“What about you?” Kartik asked.

“Not sure man. I guess I goofed this one up, but I have a job offer already. And I didn’t really wish to spoil chances for other fellows. I am happy with “Random Information Software” and frankly speaking, I don’t wish to go to Bangalore. I shouldn’t have appeared in the process” Gaurav said. He wasn’t faking for sure. He was happy with one job offer in hand and was already guilty for participating in the interview.

Arrey never mind. Koi nahi chalta hai, bas mera ho jaaye yaar…I can go to my place unflinchingly. I have to prove a lot of people wrong” Kartik said and thumped his chest. He was charged up and his expressions were electric.

At least fifty people were trying their best to read from an A4 size notice pinned on to the main notice board. The font was standard university “Times New Roman – 8”. Short fellows balanced themselves awkwardly on their toes and the tall ones were reading it out for everybody.

Every name being announced was welcomed with a loud yell and the waiting ones stayed in their excited state.

Hey! Mera hua kya?” Kartik asked assuredly.

“Yours is general category naa?” Ankit asked. Ankit was another final year student.

Arrey haan you are Singh, You are toh general category” Ankit replied before Kartik could have opened his mouth.

“What does that mean? AM I SELECTED?” Kartik shouted.

“No yaar, only 2 general out of 30 candidates. Shambhu Tiwary and Anjali Singh, rest are all SC/ST students” Ankit hated to be the bearer of the sad news.

Kartik broke down.

“What the hell? Were we appearing for a sarkaari company or what?” Kartik said sobbing. Gaurav tried consoling him.

“Relax bhai, there will be many more chances in life. Don’t lose heart. Let’s go.” Gaurav said.

“Bhai, now on there will be reservations in private jobs. Nandan Nilekani’s demands have been approved and the bill has been enforced.” Ankit replied.

“Rot in hell, bloody netas. Die” Kartik shouted as he turned back to return to the hostel and as they were proceeding towards the academic block exit gate, Ankit shouted.

Bhai…Bhai….Gaurav…Congrats, tera ho gaya hai from SC category.”

Gaurav looked at Kartik, Kartik stared him back. A moment of ackward silence followed. Kartik kept walking, Gaurav couldn’t move.

This is not a true story but What if it becomes a reality someday?
